With the exponential rise of so many free social media group forums around today, are formal Industry Trade Associations & Societies operating in a Dying Market?

For many decades formal industry trade associations and groups have existed to provide a wide range of services to their members. These groups provide an opportunity for like minded individuals to meet and discuss topical issues about what is happening in their markets as well as speculate on trends and future developments that may happen.

However, one may argue that such forums are now antiquated. Having a formal members group meeting around a table once a month or quarter no longer appears to adequately serve the issues of today.

With so much information instantly available at people's finger tips, do such trade associations now sufficiently serve their members well and probably more importantly still attract people to join?
